1980

From August 1980, KPJ244W - KPJ256W, Roe bodied Leyland Atlantean double deckers, replaced Bristol
VRTís on London Countryís route 370. All of them stayed at Grays garage, including under successors
County Bus & Coach Co., British Bus and Arriva until they were withdrawn in 1996.

October 1980 saw the new Transport Act become law. This act removed many of the restrictions that were in place affecting long
distance express services and excursions. One such example in the Thurrock area was the X1, a joint operation between Southend
Transport and Reading Transport.

1981

From August 1981, Green Line route 723 was extended from Aldgate to Victoria.

1982

Reading Transport pull out of the X1, leaving Southend transport to go it alone.
